If detected in time, prostate cancer has good chances for cure

An important job of the prostate is to produce citrate. The organ participates in a major way in the male orgasm. The prostate produces a secretion that, together with the sperm cells, forms the ejaculate, and the prostate muscles contract to contribute to ejaculation.

The citrate content in the prostate gives information on the health of the organ: prostate carcinomas have less citrate than healthy gland tissue. These subtle citrate differences are detected by modern examination procedures such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) – especially in areas of the prostate that are poorly accessible.

The fact that externally-located “peripheral” prostate zones can be examined with MRS is an important advantage because most prostate carcinomas arise here. Malignant changes in this organ that surrounds the urethra are very common in Germany: the diagnosis “prostate cancer” is made in 31,500 men each year. If a prostate carcinoma is detected and treated early the chances of cure are very high. That is why it is important to go to the annual preventive examination starting at the age of 45.
