Friends and enough sleep keep us healthy

„I maintain social contacts in order to stay healthy for a long time“. This is what 87% of the responders in a poll of GfK Market Research (GfK Marktforschung) said. Family and friends keep us fit. More that 90% of a total of 2008 participants also said they have fun and enjoy life so that they can still be active in old age.

About two thirds used deliberate relaxation and sport as direct methods for preventive care. Also, 83% of the respondents felt that enough sleep is important for staying healthy a long time. The preventive programmes of the Diagnoseklinik (Diagnosis Clinic in Munich) also help one to stay fit and healthy for a long time.

Cervical cancer: fewer new cases

The German Professional Association of Gynaecologists (Berufsverband der Frauenärzte (BVF)) points out that the number of new cases of cervical cancer has decreased significantly in the past few decades.

Since the smear, the so-called PAP test, was introduced in Germany 40 years ago, cervical cancer in Germany has decreased from roughly 30,000 new cases per year at the beginning of the 1970s to below 5,000 in 2007.

Early changes can be detected very early with the PAP test. The gynaecologic check of the Diagnoseklinik goes farther than this test: the problems that occur with the conventional PAP smear can be reduced with the use of the ThinPrep test. International studies have shown that the ThinPrep test gives more accurate results than the conventional PAP smear. Upon reaching the age of 40, women should be sure to be examined regularly once a year. Starting at this age, however, their willingness to have the examination done declines, even though the risk of cancer rises.
