Why the search for metastases is so important
Cancer is a malicious disease: even if the origin (so-called primary tumour) is discovered and treated, the patient can still be in danger. Many malignant tumours tend to seed other areas of the body. We call these seedings metastases. They can develop in lymph nodes or in other organs like the lungs, liver or bones. If these metastases are not detected and dealt with, they continue to grow and the malignant disease damages the body until critical organs fail.
The earlier the primary tumour and possible metastases are discovered, the better are the possibilties to fight the cancer. Today, doctors have many aids at their disposal, such as surgery, pharmacologic therapy, radiation, and other methods.
